We are so thrilled to chat with Kendall Ryan author of Hitched. Here, Kendall shares a few facts about herself and the five books that have inspired her writing most!
I outline my book, start to finish so that I know the theme and events of each chapter, and then I write the book in approximately 3-4 months. I spent another month working with beta readers and my editing team.
Nothing! I don’t like clutter. Okay, that’s not totally true. I have a lamp on my nightstand, and sometimes a couple of toys. Wait, that sounded weird—not those kinds of toys! I have 2 two-year olds and they leave their toys everywhere.
Abbi Glines, Christina Lauren, Jennifer Echols.
The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls – One of the most powerful books I’ve ever read. It’s a beautifully honest and raw memoir that took a hefty amount of courage to write, I’m sure. The author has lead a complicated and unique life, and her talent in sharing her story took guts that I admire so, so much.
Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins – This is such a fun romp of a story, bursting with heart and first time sexual tension that can only come with navigating those tricky teen years – and in Paris, no less! The way Miss Perkins brings her characters to life and makes you feel each struggle and success, is enviable.
The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory – Ms. Gregory’s knack for weaving a complicated, tragic, heart-wrenching, yet sexy story is unparalleled. This is a book that has stayed with me, both because of its historical aspect, but because of the beautiful way it’s researched and told.
Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein – This is a book I read so many times as I child, and now I’m enjoying reading it to my own little ones. I think this book was perhaps the first time (of many) that I developed a crush on an author. To me, authors are superheroes – I wanted to understand how they could transport me into a different world, just through their use of the twenty-six letters in the alphabet, how they could make me feel so many things. This is one of the first books I recall being in awe of the man pictured on the back cover and wanting to learn to do just what he did –entertain people around the world with words.
Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen – This is one of those rare, magical, highly entertaining books that transport you into another world and holds you hostage there until you’ve uncovered every secret bound within its pages. It’s a beautiful story with adventure, romance, tragedy, history and timeless appeal.
