We are so thrilled to chat with Vicki Cody, author of Army Wife: A Story of Love and Family in the Heart of the ArmyHere, Vicki shares a few facts about herself and gives us a sneak peak into her workspace!

What is your favorite scene in your book-

Sitting at the memorial service after the Gander crash; looking at the thousands of Screaming Eagle Soldiers on the parade field with Old Abe in the background, and realizing that I finally “got it.” I had such a clear epiphany that day about my life as as Army wife and about the life that Dick and I had chosen together.

most challenging chapter to writeWriting about when my husband commanded a squadron in the highly classified Delta Force posed a big challenge for me. I was completely open and honest throughout the book but when I tried to write about that particular time, I couldn’t be honest without getting myself and my husband in trouble. It was a significant time in our lives and to not be able to talk about it openly with my readers, went against everything I believe in. When I had to cut my manuscript, I decided it would be best to cut that chapter. I put a few references to it in another chapter.

Spring skiing in the Rockies with my husband.

What inspired your writing_

The need to tell our story in conjunction with the Army story was my motivation, but it was probably my husband and sons that inspired me.

what is your writing processThoughts are always swirling in my head. I see things in terms of it being a story. I get some of my best ideas and thoughts while on the elliptical machine at the gym or while driving by myself on a road trip. I still like to write things down with pencil and paper, making endless lists and outlines, then I begin writing on my computer. In between there is a significant amount of procrastinating, feet dragging, and doing all kinds of mindless, unnecessary chores like answering emails, making phone calls, picking lint out of my blow dryer, scrubbing grout in between the bathroom tiles, anything to avoid doing the very thing I love: writing. When I finally settle down, the words usually flow and I am quite productive. If I can’t be at the beach and am inside, I like to put one of my favorite movies on for background. I wrote most of this book while listening to/watching the following movies: The Holiday, Cinderella Man, Love Actually, The Way We Were, Dirty Dancing. It’s weird but it works for me.
